Mosquitoes and those tiny biting midges commonly known as “no-see-ums” can quickly ruin a picnic, backyard gathering, or camping trip. Not only do mosquito bites cause itchy, annoying red welts, but they can also transmit several diseases to humans, including West Nile virus, yellow fever, several strains of encephalitis, and malaria. No-see-ums are not known to transmit diseases in humans in the U.S. (though they do in other parts of the world), but they can affect livestock. These tiny creatures--about 1/16 of an inch, even smaller than a flea--can do some fierce chewing on people. According to Lynn Kinsey, professor of entomology at UC Davis, “A single bite can welt into a one- or two-inch diameter spot, which lasts about two weeks.” She warns that “scratching makes the itchy bites last twice as long and can lead to infected sores.” Some people are particularly sensitive to these painful bites.

So what can you do? Mosquito netting is one effective means of keeping these swarming little vampires at bay, and US Netting offers several options.
