Request a QuoteHow to Build a Batting Cage
Building a batting cage frame can be a fun and rewarding project, especially if you or your children are avid baseball or softball players. Below is a set of basic instructions for building a batting cage frame. Please note that dimensions can vary based on your needs and the materials available to you.
Materials:
- 1.5" diameter PVC pipe or metal pipe for a more sturdy frame
- 90-degree and T-shaped connectors compatible with your pipes
- Cable ties or zip ties
- Batting cage netting
- Tape measure
- Saw
- Rubber mallet
Here are the steps:
- Plan Your Cage: Plan the size of your batting cage. A typical size for a backyard cage might be 12 feet high, 12 feet wide, and 70 feet long, but you can adjust this based on your available space.
- Cut Your Pipes: Cut your pipes to the correct lengths for your cage. For a 12x12x70 cage, this would typically mean:
- 4 pipes 70 feet long (for the length of the cage)
- 4 pipes 12 feet long (for the height)
- 4 pipes 11 feet long (for the width)
- Assemble the Base: Connect two of the 70 feet pipes and two of the 11 feet pipes using the 90-degree connectors to create the base of your cage.
- Build the Verticals: Connect a 12 feet pipe to each corner of the base using a T-shaped connector. These will be the vertical supports for your cage.
- Connect the Top: Attach the remaining 70 feet and 11 feet pipes to the tops of the vertical supports to create the top of your cage. Use the 90-degree connectors to secure the corners.
- Reinforce the Structure: Add cross-bracing if needed. This can be done by cutting additional pipes and attaching them diagonally across the sides of the frame. Use T-connectors to attach them to the existing frame.
- Attach the Netting: Secure the batting cage netting to your frame using the cable ties. Make sure to pull it taut to prevent balls from getting trapped in loose netting.
- Inspect Your Cage: Walk around the batting cage to ensure that it is secure and that the netting is properly attached.
Please remember to always follow safety guidelines while working with tools and heavy materials, and ensure the cage is placed in a location where stray balls won't cause damage or injury.
